Ever since the draw was made, all eyes have been on the first-round encounter between brothers Elias and Mikael Ymer. Today, the long-awaited match took place on Centre Court at the Royal Tennis Hall in front of a tense home crowd.

Elias was the one who started strongest, racing to an early lead and taking the opening set 6–2. The second set was tighter, but Elias proved the stronger player on the day, sealing it in a tiebreak 7–4 to advance to the second round, where he will face Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.

”I was really pleased with how I served today, Elias said afterwards. ”We both started the match a bit tense in the first couple of games, but then it got better. Mikael is a tactician, and I knew that just one break of serve in the second set could have been enough to lose that set — but as I said, I served really well today.”

There will, however, be no all-Norwegian matchup in round two. Nicolai Budkov Kjaer showed plenty of skill in his clash with former Grand Slam champion Marin Čilić. Both players drew loud applause from the crowd with several heavy, winning backhands, but it was Čilić who demonstrated that experience still counts, prevailing 7–5, 6–3. Next up is a heavyweight second-round encounter between Čilić and Casper Ruud. That match is scheduled as the fourth of the day, starting at 18:00 on Centre Court. Following that, Leo Borg takes on Denis Shapovalov in the final match of the day on the main court.

On Court 1, the all-Swedish doubles pair Grevelius/Heinonen will close out the day’s play, facing the top-seeded Italians Bolelli/Vavassori in what promises to be a very intriguing first-round match.
