Top-seeds Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten delivered on their expectations in the double’s final of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open. The Finnish-British duo had the honour of lifting The Sven Davidson Doubles Trophy after defeating Petr Nouza and Patrik Rikl from Czechia with a score of 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday.
Heliövaara/Patten were down a service break in the first set, but after a shaky start, the reigning Wimbledon champions showcased their class. The scenes after match point were rather unusual. An ecstatic Heliövaara celebrated joyously, while Patten appeared almost unfazed.
"I thought we held serve until 5-2, so I wasn’t aware that we had won," explained the friendly Brit, with a big smile.
For Harri Heliövaara, the victory was especially emotional. The 35-year-old from Helsinki became the second Finnish champion in Stockholm, following Henri Kontinen's victory in the double’s tournament five years ago.
"This is my home tournament, and I always want to come back here as long as I play tennis. This title means a lot to me because I got to share it with my 3-year-old daughter, who has been here all week," Heliövaara shared.
The 55th edition of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open concludes on Sunday with a high-class singles’ final between Tommy Paul and Grigor Dimitrov.
