Countless world stars have played in Stockholm since the inaugural year of 1969. In nearly half of the 55 editions, the men's singles title has been won by a Grand Slam champion. All tournament winners have at some point in their careers been ranked in the top 15 in the world.
The BNP Paribas Nordic Open has an impressive legacy. On no fewer than 39 occasions, a player who has reached the top 5 in the world at some point in their career has stood as the singles champion in Stockholm. Additionally, all winners have advanced at least to the round of 16 at the Grand Slam level and have been ranked among the world’s 14 best players.
It is clear from the compilation below that something truly special is required to win in Stockholm.

On four occasions, both women and men have competed in Stockholm. The official women’s events have also maintained a very high level. All champions at the Royal Tennis Hall have won Grand Slam tournaments and been ranked in the top 3 in the world. Similar to Stan Smith and Arthur Ashe among the men's champions, Billie Jean King was also regarded as the best player in the world for an extended period before the introduction of computer rankings.

The first edition in Stockholm was held in 1969, making the tournament the oldest indoor event on the ATP Tour. However, there are around twenty comparable outdoor tournaments that have taken place throughout the open era. Of these classic tournaments, only Rome, Wimbledon, and the US Open have had all of their champions from 1969 onward ranked among the top 14 in the world at some point during their careers.
