Both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic were eliminated early in the men's singles at the US Open tennis tournament. Of the eight quarterfinalists, only Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev have previously won at the Grand Slam level.
Sinner and Medvedev will face each other in a highly anticipated quarterfinal in New York. Sinner initially found himself in trouble in the round of 16 against crowd favorite Tommy Paul, but despite an early double break against him, the world number one managed to dismiss the American in straight sets. Meanwhile, Medvedev showed that he is coming into great form by losing only four games against Nuno Borges from Portugal.
Despite all the remaining players being seeded, this year's US Open will be remembered for a number of remarkable upsets. Carlos Alcaraz, who won both the French Open and Wimbledon, crashed out in the second round against the 74th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp.
Olympic champion Novak Djokovic was defeated by Alexei Popyrin in the third round. Popyrin thereby demonstrated that his surprising victory in this summer's Masters tournament in Montreal was no fluke.
For Djokovic, this was his earliest exit at the US Open since 2006, and the loss also meant that none of the "Big Three" (Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal) won a Grand Slam tournament this year for the first time since 2002.
Special Fact - Four Quarterfinals in the Same Year
After his strong performance at the US Open, Jannik Sinner has become one of eight players in the 21st century to reach all four Grand Slam quarterfinals within a calendar year. However, Sinner still has a long way to go to match Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who achieved this feat eight times. Federer's streak of 36 consecutive quarterfinals or better in Grand Slam events must be regarded as one of tennis's most unbreakable records. Of the eight racket ambassadors listed below, all except Novak Djokovic have played in Stockholm.
