The legendary Stan Wawrinka will compete in this year's BNP Paribas Nordic Open, which will take place from October 12-20 at the Royal Tennis Hall. The three-time Grand Slam champion is looking forward to participating in front of the knowledgeable Swedish audience.
"I am very pleased to announce that I will be returning to Stockholm to compete in the beautiful Royal Tennis Hall. The tournament is unique with its fantastic history. I can't wait to meet you all soon," says Stan Wawrinka from the ongoing US Open.
Throughout his long and successful career, Wawrinka has won three Grand Slam tournaments. In 2014, he defeated Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final, while he secured victories against Novak Djokovic in the finals of the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. In addition, the accomplished Swiss player has won an Olympic gold medal in doubles, the Davis Cup, and the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo.
"We are incredibly proud to welcome Stan Wawrinka to this year's BNP Paribas Nordic Open. His impressive career, including three Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal, makes him a fantastic ambassador for our tournament. We look forward to seeing him compete and create unforgettable moments for our fans," says Rasmus Hult, CEO of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open organizing committee.
Stan Wawrinka is a huge crowd favorite worldwide, thanks to his spectacular play, pleasant demeanor, and beautiful one-handed backhand. The 39-year-old Swiss player is making his fourth appearance in Stockholm, where he played a classic three-set quarterfinal against compatriot Roger Federer in 2010. Wawrinka will be joined by World No. 8 Casper Ruud in this year's tournament.
"It is very gratifying that Stan Wawrinka will be competing. Stan is immensely popular wherever he goes in the world, and he possesses what might be the best one-handed backhand we have ever witnessed in tennis," comments Thomas Enqvist, Tournament Director for BNP Paribas Nordic Open.
The BNP Paribas Nordic Open was first held in 1969 at the Royal Tennis Hall, making it the oldest indoor tournament on the ATP Tour. Over the years, an overwhelming majority of the world's top tennis players have visited Stockholm, with tournament winners including John McEnroe, Björn Borg, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, and Roger Federer.
